Amazonite and Smoky Quartz, Colorado

Painted over two nights, a second Colorado amazonite and smoky quartz. This one is from the same mine as the previous one posted (Smoky Hawk claim, Crystal Peak area, Teller Co., Colorado, USA), but the amazonite is much bluer and the smoky quartz brown rather than black. Interesting how the two forms can occur so close to one another. Rob Lavinsky specimen, painted with permission. Water-mixable oil on black card.

My second painting for 2013. The colour in the photo doesn't quite match the actual painting. I will have to retake the photo in daylight later. Smoky Quartz and Microcline var. Aquamarine, Pakistan...

A watercolour painting of an aquamarine specimen from Pakistan. This specimen was on display at Tucson in 2011. The painting is on black card (the sort used for matting pictures) using only three watercolour pigments. This is a larger painting than I normally do (see 2nd photo).

Rogerley Fluorite...

A stunning fluorite stalactite from the Rogerley Mine, Weardale, England. A classic English fluorite deposit. This specimen for sale at the 2011 Tucson Show in the UK Mining Ventures room.

Parisite-(Ce), Malawi...

Painted in the lead up to the 2012 Joint Australian Mineralogical Societies Seminar in Perth, with the theme being rare earth minerals. Parisite is not something that you pick up out in the bush! This specimen was up for sale in Tucson last year and is a very large specimen for the species. It comes from Mount Malosa in Malawi and was priced at $4,500.

Elbaite, Pakistan...

I have now got a set of Derwent Inktense pencils. This painting was completed tonight using a combination of Inktense pencils and standard watercolours, as usual on black paper.

This painting went into an exhibition at Beaufort, Victoria, and was on display over the Queens Birthday long weekend on  9th to 11th of June. It looks great framed up and was listed for sale at $450. No buyers though.

Wutong Emperor...

The Wutong Emperor is a very large rhodochrosite that was displayed at the 2011 Tucson Show. It was extracted from the Wutong mine in China, and loaned by the Chinese Government for display. The actual specimen is about a metre tall!
